Piazza Alberica is the largest and most important historic square in Carrara. The area where it stands, once uninhabited, was the ancient Platea Porcorum, the site of the livestock market.

The name Piazza Alberica derives from Alberico I Cybo-Malaspina, who renovated it in the second half of the 16th century, making it the city's new center of economic power.
